Metacognition & Cognition in Learning.

Cognition is the mental process involved in knowing, understanding and learning. Metacognition as mentioned above is “thinking about your thinking”, a concept dating back to Aristotle – the way in which learners specifically monitor and control their learning. Metacognition describes the processes involved when you as a learner plan, monitor, evaluate and make changes to your own learning behaviour. This concept of knowing how to think is the basis of cognitive learning theory.

Cognitive learning is a branch of cognitive psychology that studies and analyzes how the human mind works during the learning process – it focuses on the mental steps used to acquire, process and understand information.

Research studies have found that metacognition is one of the most effective ways to boost students’ academic performance and enable them to reach their academic potential.

Cognitive learning helps students learn effectively and ensures that the concepts learned are understood, instead of rote learning being temporarily memorized.
